Man Wins Sex Change on Birth Certificate

MONTREAL (AP) -- A transsexual has won a precedent-setting legal battle to have his sex designation changed to male from female on his birth certificate.

His victory in Quebec Superior Court clarifies what medical procedures are required for the province to recognize a female-to-male sex change.

"The criteria will now officially be written as formal directives to the name-change bureau so that they can't make arbitrary changes," the man, known under the pseudonym Daniel Aranoff, said in an interview Wednesday.

Aranoff, 35, had undergone hormone treatment and surgery to remove female characteristics, including removal of the breasts and ovaries.
