AndroGelô
AndroGelô
is the first-ever testosterone replacement gel to be approved by the FDA for replacement
therapy in men for conditions associated with low testosterone. Low testosterone,
also known as hypogonadism, affects approximately four to five million American men.
The condition is linked with diminished interest in sex, impotence, reduced lean
body mass, decreased bone density and lowered mood and energy levels. AndroGelô will
be available with a prescription in pharmacies throughout the United States by mid-summer.

Andractimô
Unimed
is currently conducting phase III trials of Andractimô (dihydrotestosterone gel)
to treat male hormone deficiency in mature men, a condition also known as geriatric
hypogonadism, or "male menopause." This clear, odorless, non-irritating,
aesthetically pleasing topical gel delivers dihydrotestosterone transdermally to
the bloodstream. Dihydrotestosterone is a natural male hormone that recently has
been shown to potentially reduce the risk of prostate disease, particularly benign
prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer.
Between
their late 40s and early 70s, men may experience a 30 to 40 percent decrease in testosterone
levels. Untreated, this can lead to sexual dysfunction, loss of muscle mass, decreased
bone density and depressed mood. The estimated market for geriatric hypogonadism
is in excess of $1 billion.
Unimed
plans to submit a NDA for Andractimô in late 2001. Unimed also is evaluating Andractimô
for treatment of BPH, a condition in which the prostate gland that surrounds the
urethra benignly increases in size, leading to a restriction of urine flow. The market
for this potential indication is enormous as the incidence of BPH rises steeply in
men 50 and older. A patent for Andractimô use in BPH was issued in June 1998.
